Boehringer Ingelheim’s global core values of empathy, respect, passion, and trust inform its goal of delivering transparent and understandable clinical trial information to patients and the public. Five years ahead of the EU Clinical Trials regulatory requirement to provide lay summaries of clinical trial results by 2022, Boehringer had developed its first lay summary. Since then, Boehringer has created even more value for patients by adding visual components to its required documents, including brief summary videos and lay summary graphical abstracts, comics, and videos. Boehringer is now recognised as a leader in the field of lay language communication, contributing to the company’s commitment to patient centricity. In 2022, Boehringer established the Lay Language & New Media medical writing team that focuses on patient- and public-facing documents and media. The team’s efforts support Boehringer’s vision to become the #1 preferred partner for patients, caregivers and trial site staff. Excitingly, we have recently begun work collaborating with patients themselves in developing lay documents and associated visual content, supporting Boehringer’s efforts to engage patients as subject matter experts. This session provides an overview of the Lay language & New Media team’s initiatives in the visual communication and co-creation arena at Boehringer.
