Librarians Are Essential in Bridging the AI Gaps
1:30 PM - 1:45 PM
The proliferation of artificial intelligence (AI) tools has raised many questions and created a fair amount of anxiety for medical writers. There are valid concerns about the increased use of AI in medical communications, particularly on issues of authorship, ethics, copyright, scientific accuracy, and the growth of ‘scientific paper mills’ . Among the compelling concerns is whether AI will replace human medical writers.
This session will explore the pivotal role of AI in streamlining and optimising medical writing activities, while focusing on the role of the medical writer in the process. Because AI platforms are programmed to respond to prompts, these platforms have little capacity to separate fact from fiction, or science from disinformation. AI is an ‘alien intelligence’ capable of astonishing feats but must have a human at one end to determine the questions to be asked, and at the other end to adjudicate the results.
This session will also encourage medical writers to develop proficiencies that enhance their writing, such as curiosity, domain knowledge, and strong research skills. These are skills that strengthen the writer’s value and cannot be replicated by any AI platform.
