Medical writing associations are fundamental for promoting the recognition of this profession, establishing professional standards, and offering specialized education and networking to foster professional development. The role of these associations is especially relevant at a local level, where members share a specific working environment, a common language, and work experiences. In non-English speaking countries, associations also face the additional task of adapting medical writing to the rapid pace of advancements in medical science while resisting the pressure to introduce lexical and syntactic calques from English. ‘Promoting the quality of the Spanish medical language as an essential tool for the dissemination of scientific knowledge’ is a shared objective of two Spanish-based associations, the Spanish Medical Writers Association (AERTeM) and the International Association of Translators and Writers in Medicine and Related Sciences (Tremédica).

AERTeM is a national-level association founded in 2005 as an associative forum of biomedical scientific writing professionals and a platform for professional quality and development. Tremédica, also founded in 2005, is an international association providing medical translators and writers a shared space to discuss linguistic and regulatory knowledge across the vast world of Spanish-speaking countries. Both associations provide continuous professional development, access to reliable resources, and endless networking opportunities to help Spanish medical writers in their daily work.
